Welcome to the family! Starting Cub Scouts is an exciting journey for your child and your entire family. Here are the answers to the questions we hear most often from our new “Scout Parents.”
1. Who can join Pack 41?
We are a Family Pack, which means we welcome both boys and girls from Kindergarten through 5th Grade. While we are based in Abington, we have many active families from Weymouth, Rockland, Brockton, Bridgewater, and other surrounding towns.
2. How often do we meet?
- Den Meetings: Usually weekly at the United Church of Christ at 6:15 pm. This is where scouts of the same grade level (e.g., all 2nd Grade “Wolves”) meet to work on specific adventures and requirements.
- Pack Meetings: Once a month. This is a big “all-hands” gathering where every grade level (K-5) comes together at the United Church of Christ for awards, skits, and fellowship.
- Outings: We typically have one “big” event per month, such as a hike, a community service project in Abington, or a campout.
3. What is the “Class A” vs. “Class B” uniform?
- Class A (Field Uniform): This is the formal button-down shirt with patches. Scouts wear this to Pack meetings, ceremonies, and town events like the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
- Class B (Activity Uniform): This is typically a Pack 41 t-shirt. It’s perfect for hikes, campouts, and “get-dirty” activities.
- Tip: You can find uniforms at the Mayflower Council Scout Shop or online. We can help you with patch placement!
4. Does my child need to live in Abington?
Not at all! We are proud to serve the wider South Shore area. If our meeting schedule and location at the American Legion work for your family, you are welcome here.
5. What is the time commitment for parents?
Cub Scouting is a family-led program. For our youngest scouts (Lions and Tigers), a parent is required to attend meetings. For older scouts, we encourage parents to stay and get involved! Whether it’s helping with a craft or joining the committee, the more involved you are, the better experience your child will have.
6. What happens after 5th Grade?
Pack 41 has a direct pipeline to Troop 41 Abington (Boys & Girls). When your scout completes their “Arrow of Light” (5th Grade), they “bridge” over to the Troop to begin their journey toward the rank of Eagle Scout.
7. What are the costs involved?
There are annual BSA national dues and local Pack dues that cover things like awards, neckerchiefs, and supplies. We never want cost to be a barrier to scouting—if your family needs assistance, please speak privately with our Committee Chair or Cubmaster.
8. What is the “Pinewood Derby”?
It’s one of our favorite traditions! Every scout receives a block of pine wood and four plastic wheels. With a little help from a grown-up, they design and build a race car to compete on our track. It’s a highlight of the year!
